For the past centuries, India has been known to be a land of various festivals, rituals, and spiritual practices. One of the most culturally significant festivals in the country is Ambubachi Mela. Held in the northeastern part of the country, Ambubachi Mela is an annual Hindu mela or fair that marks the celebration of the goddess Kamakhya’s annual menstrual cycle.

The Ambubachi Mela is celebrated every year during the monsoon season in the month of June at the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, Assam. This mela or fair is celebrated for 3 days and is attended by thousands of devotees from all over India and other countries to seek blessings from the goddess. During this time, there are various ritualistic activities like yagnas, poojas and homams performed at the temple.

The main attraction of this festival is that the temple remains closed for 3 days as it is considered that the goddess is undergoing her yearly cycle during these days and hence should be left undisturbed. In this period, devotees offer prayers to the goddess at the temple premises and then bath in their holy waters. This ritual is believed to cleanse their souls and bring them closer to the divine energy of the goddess.

Apart from attending this mela or fair for spiritual reasons, people also get to experience the vibrant culture of Assam. There are many cultural programs and activities that are conducted at different venues all over Guwahati during this time. Some of these include folk dance performances, music shows, traditional sports tournaments, drama performances and many more. There are also stalls set up where people can shop for traditional items like handicrafts, textiles, jewellery and other local products.

Apart from being a religious event, Ambubachi Mela is also an opportunity to experience Assam’s unique culture and its traditional values. This mela or fair brings together people from all over India and even other countries who come to seek the blessings of Maa Kamakhya. It serves as a reminder of our ancient traditions that have been passed down over generations and proves to be an excellent way to understand our cultural diversity.

So, if you are looking for an opportunity to experience some unique customs and traditions, Ambubachi Mela should be your next destination!
