This is one of the significant and popular festival in India. But many not know about it. This is right day festival which us celebrated after 8 days of Holi. This festival is celebrated in States like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

This festival is celebrated due to change in weather and such particular period is regarded as start of summer month. There are of changes in this period and one can get in contact of diseases and infections which can be caused sure to change in weather.  Sheetala Goddess protects her devotees from various contagious diseases

The festival is celebrated with another name – Sheetala Ashtami. As devotees worship their goddess for good health and protection against epidemic diseases. She is the epitome of smallpox as praying her on this specifically day protects them from getting infected with such diseases.

How it is celebrated –

It is celebrated in different ways. There are different nesms and sweets being served to goddess. There are number of fairs and events being organised in rural villages. She is being offered roti, poor, Sangri, Malpua and Rabdi. Special foot items are offered to them as bhog.

There is special mantra being recited to please goddess Sheetala Mata for attaining divine blessings. The goddess got a birth   from a boon from Lord Brahma that she would be worshipped till the time she carries seeds of particular lentils. It is to believed that fast of Basoda must be observed and stale food must be consumed in order to please God sheetala Mata.
