This festival was started by the Portuguese in the 18th century to celebrate the festival of Lent, which is the Christian calendar. This is a festival of praying, fasting and staying away from any type of addiction. This festival is based on Christian calendar based on Fat Wednesday. This refers to different events of Carnival celebrations. Celebration – This festival is celebrating with frenzy of tourist activities and indulge in feasting, merrymaking and drinks throughout the day. The people of Goa forget to sleep during the carnival times as the parades continue throughout the night. The streets in Goa are decorated with attractive lighting and grand balls.

There are different festivities one can witness in Goa-dancing troupes, wearing mask, costumes, electrifying music generally performed alive, sports competitions   and parades along with good food and drinking. People in Goa flock together to enjoy good food and drinks before they start fasting.

Rituals –

This is an old tradition to clean their homes before Easter. Like Holi is celebrated in North parts of India, same way it is celebrated at Goa Carnival. They play with bright colours and get into playful fights. Initially they used to play with eggs, dye and flour, but it has been replaced with colour powders. There is unique tradition that kitchen utensils are being thrown out of window and Goan people are pampered with food and beverages.

Red and Black Dance –

The dance performance at the Goa carnival before flat Tuesday, which is the last day of feasting before lent begins. Women in red tops and black shorts, and men in red shirts and black pants in big musical bands. There are 4 major towns of Goa which are decorated during Goa carnival. Let’s see –

Vasco De Gama –

This city has a deep influence in Portuguese art, culture and well-preserved history. One can witness carnival at Japanese garden, Formula Fort, St Andrew church and monkey beach. Mapusa – This is one of the Goa epic centres as it’s close proximity to North Goa. This city also serves as base to pristine beaches in Goa. This city is famous for its Portuguese colonial past. There is enthusiastic celebration of Goa which will be held. One could visit Holy Spirit Church, Lady of grace church, Goa Chiara Museum, Cola beach garden.
