Khatambandh is a traditional Kashmiri decorative woodwork technique that combines geometrical designs and intricate patterns to create stunning results. Srinagar is well known for its skilled Khatambandh artisans who have been practicing this craft for centuries.

This is traditional Kashmiri decorative woodwork technique that involves combining ceiling of rooms, thin panels of pine wood which is cut into geometrical designs. They are having intricate patterns which create stunning designs. The ceiling was made by fitting small pieces of wood.

Usage –

The craft is used to do elaborate ceiling work in Kashmir. These craft bring both insulation against harsh cold and give rich aesthetic appeal. This used to be domain of shrines, palaces and house boats. Initially few years back, there was no demand for houseboats, but now each and every person wants for his or her house. New techniques are used on screens, doors and windows etc.

With less or no nails usage, khatamband ceiling can be easily disassembled and reassembled at the same time. Now days, khatamband has become status symbol for people living in Kashmir.

  • Insulation from cold adds to its value.
  • Ceiling acquires a unique geometric pattern.
  • Regular supply of woods helps in facilitation of khatamband artists.
  • Meditators to distribute stock with registered groups in stipulated quotas.
  • Few changes take places in process of khatamband
  • Few traditional tools were used to make markings on wooden plank.
  • Ply has replaced wood in the ceiling frames as woof has become costly.

  • Experimentation with mirror, colour combination and no limit for creativeness.
  • Patterns are star shaped
  • Brass was used for golden parts and camel bones for white parts.
