Lathe work – 

The art of making lacquer is thriving traditional craft which is once reserved to royal patronage quickly found it’s place in crafting various decorative and useful items. The lax is applied in layers with help of lac sticks that melt and transfer colour on turning wood. Once cost has been transferred, surface of wood is levelled. Each time a new coat is applied, it is ensured that lac is spread evenly 

Usage:-

Lathe craft is producing  range of products due to it’s versatility, pipes, toys, masks, doors, bangle stands. There are small decorative ceremonial stools uses in marriages are also made. The smaller items are made as per demand. 

Significance:-.

Craft is functional for nearly a century. It was practiced to entertain the baghel khandi  King and gained popularity among the masses. It became profit profession among  the masses. These artisans entered into agricultural, commercial, manufacturing, domestic and sacred feelings and enterprises of India. The craft also provides the substantial income to communities who are living in agricultural and forest tracts. 

The labour is aptly divided as every village, carpeter, turner as they lac in some other form. Lacquer is used by rich and poor. The versatility spans across the various section of the society. 

Lacquer industry can be divided into three categories on basis of production-

Independent workshop units – Here, family including children work on craft as whole set up is complete with whole set of lathe machines (either hand operated or motor driven). They work in their hones or small workshops which are constructed nearby. They sell the goods in local bazaar om their own or to bigger traders. 

 Small scale enterprises– Around 4-10 lathes are set up in artisans house. The master craftsmen hire on piece basis to other artist. This enterprise which sell the products to the exporters. The profit margins are less as they are paid on piece basis and left heavy taxes and commission. 

Medium scale enterprises –These run by exporters in large cities with large profits. They employ artisans to crafting products of desired quality. There is focus quality and mandatory fearlessness. Industries are open to new ideas and designs. 

Designs –

ﾷ These hand lacquered items have distinct look to them and make them stand apart from acrylic paints. 

ﾷ Four main colors are used in the process – yellow, green, red and silvery grey 

ﾷ Combination of these color give other shades 

ﾷ Traditional designs are being put by various government  organisations where craft are used. 

Challenges:

ﾷ Due to entry of  cheap plastic and rising prices of wood has l  craftsmen with low returns on their expertise and hard work. 

ﾷ Tried to incorporate the bright plastic colors in their lathe products to keep client interested. 

ﾷ creating products would be valued for craftsmanship and not amount of raw material used in them .

ﾷ Craft has reached a stagnation and fresh inputs from young designers are required to meet new demands and specification of export market.
